Sections were recomposed and rearranged. Gaylord Holomalia (recipient of the 2024 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Lifetime Achievement Award) recorded performances by Mana Quartet (strings), and Relle Reavis and Makaʻala Perry (vocals). Lisa wrote in personal correspondence that she liked the idea that the work, “could be performed by one person, individually, on the promise of other performers enacting it elsewhere too.”\u003c\/h5\u003e\n\u003ch5\u003eIn this version of the score for\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003eUn-Earthed\u003c\/em\u003e, the intent of the work was preserved, but the instructions in the score were adjusted so that it could be performed in community by one or more individuals, and was connected to place, activating everyday objects as sculptures of remembrance. In finding an object to perform the work, the performer is taking ownership for the sound \/ action \/ remembrance and making that object part of an imaginary Bell Tower.\u003c\/h5\u003e\n\u003ch5\u003eAs we listen and recreate this space for reflection, we honor and remember what the sculpture represents. A bit like variations on a theme, a bit like exquisite corpse.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eOn Side One the music ranges from Jonny's psychedelic-ambient steel guitar exploration, to Max's shimmering, flute-driven meditation with Floteson, and ends with Navid's minimalist, hip-hop inflected ode to a tree planted by Queen Lili'uokalani. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eSide Two opens with a floating neo-soul chordal figure by Floteson, and a guitar improvisation for his late, jazz-trumpeter father. The drone continues into T.J.'s classically influenced reverie for solo piano (recorded on the gorgeous Yamaha grand at Island Sound Studios by the legendary Gaylord Holomalia). The album closes with Jessica Ackerley eschewing her guitar for the open space of field recordings and subtle sonic manipulations of the drone itself.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eGahlord created a number of pieces he describes as etudes, using command-line tools to randomly concatenate different length segments of the drones, mimicking old school tape processes. These serve as interstitial bridges between the tracks — on the cassette, they turn each side into one seamless experience (the digital version plays as discrete tracks).\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIt seemed only appropriate to honor the origin of the project by releasing a limited number of cassette tapes.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eWe are also making stems of the drone — straight from the original cassette! — available for free via digital download here.
