Rising platform Stay Cool connects with Inner Ocean Records to bring its Family Affair event stateside to New York City!
Headlined by wordsmith and producer Illa J, singer Devin Tracy and special guest Braxton Cook, the night will blend jazz, hip-hop, R&B and soul to celebrate two years since Stay Cool’s radio debut and marks Inner Ocean and Stay Cool’s first event outside of Canada and England respectively.
True to its name the event is full of family with supporting acts from lo-fi hip-hop maestro G Mills, Athena Koumis, filmmaker Amarachi Nwosu and Stay Cool founder seangran.
Headliners
John Derek Yancey,  better known as “Illa J” is a singer, songwriter, rapper, producer and multi instrumentalist. He is a former member of the legendary group Slum Village and is the younger brother of iconic hip-hop producer J Dilla. Illa J was exposed to music at a very early age from his brother making beats in the basement of their house to his parents’ acapella jazz group training and rehearsals in their living room. The Yancey family has always been musically inclined - his father was a ghostwriter for Motown Records and mother a classically trained opera singer. Active in the industry since 2006, Illa J has released four solo albums, most recently releasing John Yancey with on Jakarta Records in November of last year. Over the years he’s collaborated with artists including Tom Misch, Kaytranada and Robert Glasper. Illa is currently gearing up to release a new EP with Atamone in Spring via Inner Ocean. Having moved to New York City six years ago to pursue a career in music, Devin has cemented himself as one to watch following standout performances at places including Bitter End, Pianos, Bowery Electric , S.O.B.'s and an impromptu performance at Terminal 5 earlier this year. The singer/songwriter has been featured on projects by Soulection stalwarts Sango and J. Robb and made his debut release with them in September 2018, when he became just the second artist to release on their Black Label series which champions emerging vocal talents. With his captivating vocals, androgynous tone and smooth selection when it comes to instrumentals Devin is a breath of fresh air to the scene.
Braxton Cook is one of this generation’s most exciting emerging voices in the jazz world. Not only does he exhibit world-class virtuosity on the alto saxophone but he is also a uniquely talented vocalist and songwriter whose sound blends Jazz, Soul, R&B, and Alternative music into a fresh new sound all his own. Since moving to NYC Braxton has collaborated with artists on both sides of the jazz/hip-hop spectrum from Christian Scott and Butcher Brown to Kiefer and Swarvy. His songs amassing millions on streams, garnering recognition from numerous publications with Ebony Magazine listing Braxton as one of the Top Five Jazz Artists To Watch (alongside Robert Glasper, Kamasi Washington, Butcher Brown, and Kris Bowers) in June 2018. Outside of the Jazz sphere Braxton has also worked with Rihanna, Solange, Tom Misch and Phony Ppl., leading to three performances on NPR’s Tiny Desk series. Most recently Braxton has released his No Doubt album which debuted at #2 on iTunes’ Jazz Charts and amassed 1M streams in its first month. He also embarked on his first international headlining tour in November 2018 performing at Tourcoing Jazz Festival, So What’s Next Jazz Festival and the legendary Ronnie Scotts Jazz Club in London, UK.

Amarachi Nwosu is a Nigerian-American self-taught photographer, filmmaker, writer and DJ. With a background in international communications, she has worked with a number of brands utilising all aspects of her creativity. As a DJ she has performed in clubs such as Tokyo’s Sound Museum Vision, stores like Barneys New York and with brands such as Budweiser for BUDX. Amarachi is dedicated to telling unique stories that bring identity and culture to light, and her work has been featured in publications such as Vogue, CNN Africa, Wonderland, Vice and Fader Magazine. Her passion for giving back has led her to develop art education workshops for kids in Nigeria and also work as a program ambassador for D&AD New Blood Shift. Nwosu is currently working on a number of music based projects between Nigeria and New York.
Athena Koumis is a music curator, DJ and violinist based in Queens, New York. She spent close to five years working at Spotify, where she started many of the platform’s instrumental hip-hop, lofi beats and jazz playlists including Lush Lofi, Jazz Vibes, State of Jazz and Butter. She is also known for founding Fresh Finds, Spotify’s cross-genre playlist series dedicated to amplifying the voices and sounds of independent artists and artists on indie labels. She currently serves as Head of Music Culture - North America for music video platform startup XITE.
At the age of 25, G Mills has been deeply engrossed in music since he was 2 years old. Playing drums in Metal and Jazz bands, he went on to study classical percussion and sound recording in University. His sound evolved musically when he discovered the beats scene in 2012 and since 2015 has been subtly crafting some of the cleanest, most inspired tracks around. Turning the lofi sound on its head wasn’t necessarily the intention but it certainly has been the byproduct.
seangran is a creative designer and the founder of Stay Cool, a platform dedicated to connecting people globally through music. During 2013 he lived in Japan and started it initially as a mix series to learn to DJ after his friends praised his musical tastes. From there he went on to interview artists and label founders, all the while releasing frequent mixes and DJing in the nearby city of Kanazawa. Since returning to his home of London in 2016 he’s grown Stay Cool into a bastion of the emerging music scene: it’s grown into a radio show, a platform with music releases and an events series. Within Stay Cool seangran has interviewed both notable names and rising ones including DJ Jazzy Jeff, Rhymefest, Soulection, Joyce Wrice, Rapsody, Mac Ayres, Braxton Cook, Joe Armon-Jones, FKJ, Lapalux and plenty more. Stay Cool
Stay Cool is a mentality and movement dedicated to connecting people globally through music. Started in 2013 as a mix series it has since grown to encompass a radio show, music platform and event series. In 2017 Stay Cool became a radio show and has released over 30 shows and featured over 70 guests including Ivan Ave, Moonchild, Plastician and Ta-Ku. Across 2018 Stay Cool released its debut compilation Altogether that saw artists from all backgrounds and musical genres (including DJ Jazzy Jeff, Rhymefest, Evil Needle, Iglooghost, Tek.Lun, Slom) unite. Since then it has gone on to amass over two millions streams and been released on cassette tape to the demand of the its fans. 2018 also marked Stay Cool’s first ever events, taking place at both clubs and members clubs such as Ace Hotel and h Club London.
Inner Ocean Records
Inner Ocean Records is a platform and collective for emerging artists to release music and visual art. Based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, the label was conceptualized in 2012 as a vehicle for artists to have their music heard and seen, to build a community of passionate people; a label for artists by artists. Operated by a close knit team the label is built around great sound and feeling; laid back, honest and forever chill. Having released a lot of different sounds; Ambient, Lofi Hip Hop, RnB, Modern Funk, Future Soul and Indie, since their inception, they’ve have prioritized natural evolution and organic growth in the music.  2019 marks the beginning of Inner Ocean Sessions, an independent Residency program that will bring artists from around the world into Inner Ocean's Studio in Calgary to foster creative artist development.
