From ambient duo Ave Grave (Sean Galloway) and Divorce Court (Lynden Williams), The Impossibility of the Present began as a transcontinental conversation between Lynden's century-old upright piano, and the only tape machine with a working power supply at Sean’s apartment in Berlin.
Created by passing deconstructed fragments of Lynden’s sparse piano arrangements through tape loops and hardware processes, the four songs are a reflection on themes both esoteric and abstract: the spectre of the past haunting the present and occluding the future, personal and endemic depression, dyschronia, and the prospect of reclaiming our personal and collective futures.
The project includes a mixture of old and new technological forms, resulting in an artifact that feels exactly caught between - an object beyond time. The looping arrhythmia of the tape deconstructs the emerging linear melodies of the piano. These indefinite recursions present themselves as an uncertain talisman of the present. A meditation on what we’ve lost, and hope for reclamation.
